My slice of heaven

2021 BOOKS

"It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone. " -- Rose Kennedy

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. ”  -- Plato

“The life of the dead is set in the memory of the living. ”  -- Marcus Tullius Cicero

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not a mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love. ”  -- Washington Irving

“We all wear masks and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing our own skin.”  -- André Berthiaume

“I am an invisible man. No I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allen Poe: Nor am I one of your Hollywood movie ectoplasms. I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids - and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, simply because people refuse to see me.”  -- Ralph Ellison

“Without knowledge, life is no more than the shadow of death.”  -- Molière

“Everyone calls himself a friend, but only a fool relies on it: nothing is commoner than the name, nothing rarer than the thing.”  -- Jean de La Fontaine

“Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.”  -- Jean de La Fontaine

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Niki Slobodian #1) by J.L. Murray

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea - J.L. Murray

I quite enjoyed this book and I thought Niki was a great character. It did feel a bit fast paced, but I don't think it was a bad thing necessarily. I'm looking forward to reading the next book and hopefully there'll be more info about Sam, Gage and Eli. Not to mention Niki's dad and what he may be or not be and whether that'll have an influence on Niki.

Steal the Light (Thieves #1) by Lexi Blake

Steal the Light - Lexi Blake

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I may have to on-hold this series for a while though. I'm not a fan of Daniel and I don't trust him. But it sure looks like he is there for the long haul. He is a bit of an ass and so secretive. I liked Dev on the other hand. Nice and uncomplicated and very sharing with his knowledge.

I might have gotten a bit of whiplash over the betrayal and how easily Zoey forgave that.

The plot was nice, but I hated how fragile Zoey was.

Crazy in the Blood (Latter-Day Olympians #2) by Lucienne Diver

Crazy in the Blood - Lucienne Diver

I liked this book. I think the mythology is interesting and I'm curious as to what's gonna happen next. I'm still at a toss up between Armani and Apollo, but with the ambrosia in the picture and what it does, maybe Apollo has a small advantage.

2

Bad Blood (Latter-Day Olympians #1) by Lucienne Diver

Bad Blood - Lucienne Diver

That was an interesting book I think, I enjoyed it a lot and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I like Tori and I hope there will be more about her heritage in the following books. I think Armani is nice, but I'm really curious about Apollo. I don't have a favorite yet. The plot was great.

SPOILER ALERT!

Mind Over Monsters (A F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad Investigation #1) by Jennifer Harlow

Mind Over Monsters - Jennifer Harlow

This was a very nice start and I enjoyed it a lot. I hope Bea will end up with Oliver, but if it's possible I suppose I would take both him and Will, but Oliver I like the best currently.

I loved the plot and the different powers. I can't wait to see what happens next, in part because I read the blurb. I took me a bit to get used to the writing style, but now that I have I very much like it.

ETA;

I'll probably on-hold the series because of book 4's reviews.

I'm not interested in her choosing Will.

Bait (Angler, #1) by Annie Nicholas

Bait - Annie Nicholas

I hate the kind of review that I'm about to write, because after finishing this book I realized that I felt nothing. I didn't feel the love, I didn't get the lovey dovey kind of vampire Rurik was. He seemed way to girly to me.

I don't know if I wanna read more.

SPOILER ALERT!

Shine (Mageri, #5) by Dannika Dark

Shine - Dannika Dark

Sometimes it's a bitter sweet feeling to finish a series. I'll miss Silver and Mr. Cross the most, but I think Levi and Finn were amazing too.

I was a bit bummed that there was no catch up with Sunny and Kane.

(show spoiler)

Kinda felt useless to have Silver meet him, when nothing came of it.

I think the final moment in court was absolutely priceless and I'll always treasure that.

Christian leaving I'm feeling conflicted by.

(show spoiler)

I guess I'll envision him happy somewhere.

I think this is one of those series that will stick for a while.

4

Closer by Dannika Dark

Closer - Dannika Dark

I mostly skimmed this because I recognized the name, Kane. I wanted to see if it was who I thought it was and it was. I liked what I read, but I think it could easily have been skipped.

4

Gravity (Mageri #4) by Dannika Dark

Gravity (Mageri, #4) - Dannika Dark

I enjoyed this book after I got over the initial drama - It was something I expected to happen and rather predictable and I hated it. But now that it was dealt with the book became nice again. I'm happy for the turn of events and I can't wait to read the conclusion.

2

Impulse (Mageri #3) by Dannika Dark

Impulse (Mageri, #3) - Dannika Dark

Oh this was a very nice read. I was glad to get to know more about Silver's circumstance, but I hope to learn more about it next book. Mm and what a delight Mr. Cross was in this one. After all the drama was out of the way. I don't like Tarek at all. I hope he gets his punishment in the end. I thought the sex scene was sweet.

1

Twist (Mageri, #2) by Dannika Dark

Twist (Mageri, #2) - Dannika Dark

So scratch Adam and Simon from the list of potential love interests. I'm all Mr. Cross now. He is one of my all time favorite love interests. I'm gonna be sorely pissed if she doesn't end up with him in the end. I love him. The plot was great and I enjoyed every second of it, although my favorite part was when Mr. Cross entered the scene. I simply can't wait to read the next book so I can see what happens next and with them. Oh and Levi is great - I hope he will appear as well.

3

Sterling (Mageri #1) by Dannika Dark

Sterling - Dannika Dark

Overall I enjoyed this book, but there were some strange parts. I liked Zoë a fair amount. Adam and Simon were great. I'm not sure what to think of Justus, but I suppose more will be learnt in the next book. I'm curious as to Zoë's uniqueness and what becomes of Adam. Also I'm not sure who her main love interest is. I'm split between having Adam and Simon as my favorites, although that may also very well change next book.

4

Long Live the Queen (The Immortal Empire #3) by Kate Locke

Long Live the Queen - Kate Locke

This is one of my favorite trilogies and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I liked the experiments and how it all came together in the end. Xandra and Vex was awesome, but William he held my admiration. I wonder what happened with Juliet in the end. It was a very nice conclusion and I wasn't disappointed one bit. I hope the author will dabble some more in this genre.

4

The Queen Is Dead (The Immortal Empire #2) by Kate Locke

The Queen Is Dead - Kate Locke

I think this was almost as good as book 1 and I really enjoyed reading it.

I loved the time Xandra spent with the goblins - It was nice seeing them in a different light and the scene with the baby was just the cutest ever.

I'm glad she found Val and all the parts leading up to it. I like the scheming part of the book as well. I'm really curious to find out how it'll all end in the conclusion.

I hope Xandra and Vex will have a future together.

5

God Save the Queen (The Immortal Empire #1) by Kate Locke

God Save the Queen - Kate Locke

This book really blew me away and I can't honestly say that I didn't expect that.

I thought it was just gonna be a normal read, but it was so much more. It had everything I love in a book. I loved Xandra and Vex - and the goblin prince. I thought the plot and premise was very nice and though it was labeled as steampunk I was pleased to see they had some form of modern devises - I don't think I can read a book, let alone a series with out that. I can't wait to start the next book.
