My slice of heaven

2021 BOOKS

"It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone. " -- Rose Kennedy

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. ”  -- Plato

“The life of the dead is set in the memory of the living. ”  -- Marcus Tullius Cicero

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not a mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love. ”  -- Washington Irving

“We all wear masks and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing our own skin.”  -- André Berthiaume

“I am an invisible man. No I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allen Poe: Nor am I one of your Hollywood movie ectoplasms. I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids - and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, simply because people refuse to see me.”  -- Ralph Ellison

“Without knowledge, life is no more than the shadow of death.”  -- Molière

“Everyone calls himself a friend, but only a fool relies on it: nothing is commoner than the name, nothing rarer than the thing.”  -- Jean de La Fontaine

“Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.”  -- Jean de La Fontaine

SPOILER ALERT!

City of Pearl (The Wess'har Wars #1) by Karen Traviss

City of Pearl - Karen Traviss

I found myself really enjoying this book after reading the first chapter. When I read the prologue I was a bit nervous that the book would be from Ares POV, but it wasn't entirely. It shifted now and then, however it flowed rather nicely so it was very easy to adjust to.

After reading a few chapters it soon became clear that the humans had become rather entitled and showed a rather cynical look on human behavior.

Shan was a delight to read about. Although I'm a bit curious as to what her age is. I don't remember that being disclosed, but I got the feeling she is rather old - Probably way older than what I prefer in my reads, so perhaps its just as well I don't know.

I think the world building was excellent and the alien species were interesting and imaginative.

I must confess I shed a tear, when the scientist cut open the baby bezeri in the name of science irregardless of the very specific commands to not take samples. That the scientist thought the bezeri was dead, doesn't change the fact that she killed a sentient being and I found the execution scene very fulfilling.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book,

especially because of the c'naatat parasite and how it will change Shan. I'm also hoping that, that will change Shan and Ares friendship to the more intimate one in light of their shared condition.
